The sustainability of fisheries is first and foremost a matter of environmental stewardship. It is our obligation to protect environmental conditions and biodiversity. Those things should be protected for their intrinsic importance, separate from our interest in them. But, of course, sustainability is critical to our wellbeing too because environmental degradation and overfishing will inevitably mean the end of fishing.

We should counsel restraint and condemn terrorism and condemn any breach of international law or humanitarian principle, including collective punishment. We here in Australia must reject the taking of sides and the fomenting of prejudice and division, reject and respond firmly to any hate speech or racial and religious practice—all of us, every day must practise this—in speech and conduct moderation, tolerance, compassion and support for social cohesion, harmony and peace.

Read more...This agreement has been labelled as ‘landmark’, quite rightly, I think, by the World Trade Organization because it’s the first WTO agreement to specifically deliver on an SDG target and the first broad, binding and multilateral agreement on ocean sustainability. It will provide for legally binding rules for fisheries-specific subsidies concerning marine wild capture fishing and fishing related activities at sea.
