Applications open for the Government’s Youth Steering Committee

The Albanese Government is establishing a Youth Steering Committee to enable young Australians to help shape their future through Australian policies and programs.

Applications are now open for the Government’s Youth Steering Committee, and young people living in Cockburn, East Fremantle, and Fremantle aged 12 – 25 are encouraged to apply.

Establishing the Youth Steering Committee is an important step to make sure young Australian’s have greater input in shaping government decisions.

The Youth Steering Committee will include up to 15 young people from diverse backgrounds across Australia, with applicants not requiring any previous experience to apply.

The Committee members will help develop the Government’s new Youth Engagement Model and work closely with Minister for Youth Dr Anne Aly, government officials, and Members of Parliament.

Because the committee should represent the diversity of young people in Australia, the application process actively encourages applications from a range of backgrounds and experiences, including young people with a disability or lived experience of mental ill-health, and young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

The committee membership will prioritise gender diversity, First Nations people, and representation from regional, rural, and remote locations across every state and territory.

The Youth Steering Committee’s first meeting will take place in November in Canberra. The Committee is supported by the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC).

Applications to join the Committee close on Wednesday 5 October. More information can be found at www.ayac.org.au.
