The JobKeeper Wage Subsidy is an important measure to ensure workers are supported and remain connected to employment during the health crisis. However, as a local member, Josh is concerned the scheme is not being implemented and managed as well as it could be by the Morrison Government.
The subsidy has a concerningly low take-up rate, and has been poorly targeted meaning more than one million casual workers have received no support. That is also true for many workers excluded by the program’s design, including people in local government, universities, arts and cultural enterprises, and others.
The Morrison Government has now provided details of how JobKeeper and JobSeeker will decrease and be withdrawn, but it’s unclear whether this is based on a proper assessment of the dire economic circumstances and future risks.
